To drive a commercial motor vehicle, drivers must possess a high level of experience, skill, and physical abilities that would not necessarily be needed for a non-commercial driver. In order to receive a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), the driver must pass both a skills test and a knowledge exam. Not only are these required, but once a holder of this license, drivers are held at a higher standard on the road than those driving a non-commercial vehicle. Truck drivers hold much responsibility while on the road.

How to Get a CDL

A driver must be 21 years of age to apply to get their CDL. First, a driver must get their Commercial Learner’s Permit after passing the knowledge exam for the class of truck they want to receive their CDL for. They are allowed to operate vehicles that their CLP allows them to with a driver that holds a CDL as a passenger. Before drivers can take their skills test and driving examination to get their CDL, they must drive with their CLP for a minimum of 14 days to gain experience. Once you pass both exams, you must pay for your CDL. Now you are all set to embark on your trucking career. At Al-Amin Brothers LLC, we require our drivers to be 26 years of age or older with 5 years of experience driving CDL class A vehicles. The CDL must be in the state of residence. We are always looking for new drivers to join our fleet!

Classifications of CDL license

A commercial driver’s license  is needed for a couple of different types of transportation. CDL licenses are divided into three categories; A, B, and C. Class “A” CDL license is needed when driving a vehicle that has a total weight of 26,000 pounds and the weight of the towed units is greater than 10,000 pounds. Class “B” is similar to class “A” except that the towed units weigh less than 10,000 pounds. Finally, Class “C” CDL licenses are needed to transport vehicles that carry 16 passengers or more. Additionally, there are endorsements that drivers can get or may be required to get depending on the type of material they haul. For example, if you are a driver that hauls hazardous material, a special endorsement will be required in addition to a CDL license.
